British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
