Former British Soldier Accused of Murdering Kenya Woman Shows Up in Courtroom

A suspect has appeared in court as extradition hearings commenced in the case of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman who was killed near a UK military installation in 2012.

Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is hailing from the Manchester area, appeared before the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and told the court he planned to fight the deportation. Reports indicate that he was detained on Thursday evening.

An arrest warrant for Purkiss was authorized by a Nairobi court in the month of September. The state attorneys told the Kenyan court that Purkiss had been accused of a single count, of murder, and that the government of Kenya would request his deportation to face charges.

Purkiss served formerly as a medical attendant with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the army unit for the northwestern England, including on deployments in Afghanistan.

The victim, twenty-one, a hairdresser who had a infant daughter, disappeared after a evening out, and her corpse was found 60 days later in the premises of the lodging where she had most recently observed.

Nobody had before been detained or accused in association with her passing. Purkiss’s arrest came after a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a report in the year 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the media outlet approached several serving and ex-military personnel in the military group.

The probe has been spearheaded by investigators from Kenya, which, under a bilateral defence agreement, maintains prosecutorial power in the matter.
