Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
