Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
