Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account next month named Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling the period spent behind bars.

This news came just 11 days after the former president was released as he appeals the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to secure political financing from the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, indicating the memoir centers around his thoughts while in seclusion rather than wider commentary regarding the overcrowded and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, not present at the prison, where noise is endless commotion,” he continues. “The din persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear did he manage to review and analyze the texts he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail later flees to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was placed secluded to protect him in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities at La Santé prison located in the capital. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts in prison worried that any food could have been tampered with. Options were available to cook for himself but refused this, according to reports. Unclear remains if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who saw him regularly daily throughout the jail term, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, listened to yells after dark and the urgent intervention next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October when a Paris court gave him five years in prison for illegal collaboration over a scheme to acquire political donations during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for early next year.
