Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Rebuke
Personalities from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a substantial amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a appalling and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Party
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
