The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A senior representative involved in the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are striving to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict administration of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to end in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the western district, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of six people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south, health workers said.
