The Portuguese Forward Scores Hat-Trick as The Blues Deliver Liam The Boss with Happy Homecoming to Hull City
Against a backdrop of sleet, flurries, and a biting breeze off the waters of the Humber Estuary, alongside a resolute Hull City side pushing hard for promotion, this presented all the makings of a challenging evening’s task for Chelsea.
"We could have added to our tally but Hull are a good team and it was a tough fixture; I am very pleased with the performance," the manager stated. "Hull City means a lot to me so it was great to get a good reception from both sets of supporters. The attitude of the lads was superb."
Liam Rosenior holds this city close to his heart, given some of his relatives hail from Hull and his successful period in charge of the Tigers. His positive connection was extended with a magnificent performance from his team, who in the end strolled into the next round of the famous old competition.
Clinical Edge Seals Comprehensive Victory
Seventy-two hours after letting slip a two-goal lead in the Premier League, there was a hint of vulnerability about Chelsea going into this intriguing tie. The packed Hull crowd clearly felt it too, but Rosenior's men handled the challenge with ease.
The manager rang the changes, enacting seven of them to his starting lineup. The match might and perhaps ought to have been settled long before it actually was, with two Estêvão Willian and Liam Delap guilty of missing glorious chances to put Chelsea in front in the opening period.
But, luckily for the away team, their Portuguese attacker was in a much more clinical frame of mind. He broke the scoring with a spectacular long-range strike, which proved to be the spark for Chelsea to assume control of the match. By the final whistle, they had four, with Neto scoring a trio of them for a brilliant hat-trick.
The Forward's Response and Influence
The home side displayed great fight throughout, but the clearer opportunities consistently fell to the visitors. The winger should have broken the deadlock when he went past goalkeeper Dillon Phillips before unbelievably shooting over. The striker then had a comparable nightmare incident in front of goal against his old team.
He deflected a Phillips's kick which bounced back from the bar, and he began to run away thinking the ball had gone over the line. It had not, and by the time he realised, Hull's backline had reacted to avert the threat.
Delap had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was immensely instrumental from there on out, providing three assists. The first was for the opening goal as his pass set up Neto to score from outside the box. Shortly after the second half began, it was two as the forward's corner went directly in under the keeper's legs.
Contest Put Beyond Doubt and Attention Turns
Seven minutes after Neto’s second, the tie was effectively ended as a dazzling dribble from the forward laid on Estêvão to tap into an unguarded goal. Neto then finished his hat-trick as the provider again delivered the decisive pass for the attacker to coolly slot past a helpless Phillips.
At that point, the effort Hull had done in the opening thirty minutes had long since erased. Their focus must now return to achieving a return to the Premier League under Sergej Jakirovic, who left out several key players with that goal in mind.
"I think we earned at least one goal but if we perform like this we will be in a strong situation in the Championship," he said. "Never surrender, maybe in the upcoming games this can be a good example of how we should play."
Hull showed plenty of endeavour to the final whistle, and they nearly claimed a late goal when Lewis Koumas struck a post in injury time. But this was Chelsea’s night, and another encouraging stride for their recently-appointed manager at a place he knows very well.
FA Cup History Look Promising
That resulted in an ultimately straightforward evening’s work, and the FA Cup-shaped signs are good from here for the winners. They have played Hull on three previous occasions in this competition in the last decade and on each occasion, they have gone on to reach the final. Much remains to be done in that respect, but this was another significant positive for the Chelsea boss.
