Zohran Mamdani affirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
